Deal reached with fired school official

The Oxnard Union High School District has reached a tentative settlement in a wrongful termination case involving former Assistant Principal Becky Romano, but the terms were not disclosed. The district's legal fees in the case - which court records show were at least $340,000 through May - are still at issue in a separate court battle between the district and the Ventura County Star.

Atascadero schools superintendent remains in ICU at Stanford after fall

Schools Superintendent John Rogers remained in stable condition Wednesday after falling from a tree he was trimming in his yard Sunday. Rogers, currently at Stanford Medical Center, has numerous fractures, including at least seven broken ribs, and some internal trauma.

New middle school nearly ready to open

Chavez Middle School, under construction for more than two years and delayed by more than six months, is expected to open at the end of February, officials said yesterday. The $25 million campus will be the third middle school in the Oceanside Unified School District.

State plan to track student performance advances

The California Department of Education has selected IBM to develop a student data system that can track individual students' performance over time. The system will be used to improve the accuracy of dropout and graduation rates and gauge how well programs are working.

Teaching dispute leads to parent picketing and student walkout

Parents upset with the transfer of a fourth-grade teacher involved in a dispute with administrators over her teaching style took their students out of class and picketed in front of Sunkist Elementary School on Wednesday.

Teachers clean up vandalized classrooms

McKinley Avenue Elementary School in South Los Angeles is wrapped with a spiked iron fence. Its windows are shuttered with wire frames and its offices are equipped with motion sensors linked to an alarm. None of those measures, however, was enough to stop vandals who broke into the school during the holiday vacation.

Border schools focusing on unauthorized students

With too many students and too few classrooms, Calexico school officials took the unusual step of hiring someone to photograph children and document the offenders. Santillan snaps pictures at the city's downtown border crossing and shares the images with school principals, who use them as evidence to kick out those living in Mexico.
