Vista schools will tap 133 for potential layoffs

Vista Unified School District officials will let 133 district employees know that they may be laid off this year. The district's board of trustees reluctantly decided on the move at a heavily attended meeting Thursday night.

Escondido USD board OKs retirement bonus

Escondido Union School District employees who notify the district by March 26 of their plans to retire before the next school year are eligible for a one-time bonus under a plan approved by trustees Thursday night.

Chico USD board tables vote on portion of developer fees

Representatives of Chico's business and construction community, who waited through hours of Chico Unified School District's board of trustees meeting, got what they asked for just before midnight Wednesday. The board voted unanimously to table a vote on whether or not to begin charging developer fees to new commercial and industrial construction. The issue will be brought back at the board's March 26 meeting.

Students consumed recalled beef

More than a third of the 143 million pounds of California beef recalled last week went to school lunch programs, with at least 20 million pounds served, officials with the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Thursday.

Acalanes district plans to cut jobs

After this week's largest-ever recall of beef -- nearly 50 million pounds of which went to schools nationwide -- officials are nervous about the quality of the U.S. Department of Agriculture food that they have no choice but to trust.
