Fallbrook High School board approves layoffs

Fallbrook High School board members approved a package of budget cuts Monday to cover an anticipated $1.5 million budget shortfall, spreading the cuts among teachers, classified staff, administrators and themselves.

School board's letter rails against prison

Antioch School Board President Walter Ruehlig will read a letter at Tuesday's County Board of Supervisors meeting, asking officials to drop an area near Deer Valley High School from a list of possible sites being considered for a transitional state prison facility.

Marin schools face layoffs after state cuts

In Marin, the cuts would strike deepest at the Novato, Ross Valley and San Rafael Elementary districts, where property tax funds do not meet the needs of local schools and districts depend on the state for a significant portion of their budget.

Shattered sense of security

Even as school officials struggled Monday to provide a sense of security for children in Cypress Park, a 50-foot patch of grass was all that separated second-grade classrooms at Aragon from the rose- and candle-strewn memorial to Marcos Salas, shot 17 times in a flare of gang violence. He later died.

Mayor appoints superintendent of instruction

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, moving to improve struggling campuses that are taking part in his high-profile and high-stakes school reform effort, has tapped a veteran San Diego educator to take charge of instruction at those schools.
