Schools want more choices

County educators demanded Thursday that California lawmakers reject Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's call for 10 percent across-the-board cuts and look at alternatives. "The governor's budget does not prioritize education," San Joaquin County Office of Education Superintendent Frederick Wentworth said in a news conference before about 350 school officials, teachers, board members, parents and other educators.

Vista USD delays opening of magnet high schools

Vista Unified School District's proposed magnet high schools will now cost between $43 million and $62 million, depending on what options trustees decide to add later this month. After hearing a report Thursday on the increased cost, district trustees voted to delay opening the dual high school campus until the fall of 2009.

Clerical jobs to be cut as teachers dodge layoffs

An undetermined number of clerical and support workers will lose their jobs as part of school officials' efforts to cut next year's budget by $14 million. Thirty-one teaching and administration positions also will be abolished through retirements and attrition, said Jane Smith, Fontana Unified School District superintendent.
