Stockton USD bond work ahead
In a little more than one month, workers are scheduled to begin a seven-week $2.59 million project painting exteriors of a dozen Stockton Unified School District K-8 sites, freshening them up just in time for the start of the 2008-09 academic year. When the painting begins, the project will mark the first tangible use of funds from Measure Q, the $464.5-million bond overwhelmingly approved by district voters three months ago.Schools begin to bring back teachers
Less than two months after area school districts told more than 1,200 teachers that they might be out of work next year, some are starting to take back those pink slips. The most dramatic turnabout came in the Vista Unified School District last month, when trustees agreed to give more than 100 teachers their jobs back.LAKE ELSINORE: Teachers say administrators went to Nevada to catch them on day off
Two school district administrators traveled almost 300 miles and crossed state lines to catch teachers they mistakenly believed were using sick days to take a three-day weekend in Nevada, according to teachers who call the incident "creepy" and "Orwellian."Antioch schools tighten policy on transfers
Heather Lopez and her family are among the so-called "Oakley orphans," those families near the Oakley-Antioch border who wrangle with school administrators about the problems that arise from living within the city limits of one community and the school district of another. And now that Antioch Unified has tightened its interdistrict transfer policy again, more Oakley parents in the area west of Empire Avenue might find it tougher to get permission to pull their children out of Antioch schools.Central Unified to ask for $152m bond for upgrades

Candace Glazer is a kindergarten teacher, but you also could say she's a conductor who leads 20 5-year-olds. Tentative budget cuts in the Oceanside Unified School District could enlarge Glazer's “orchestra” significantly. More than two dozen kindergarten teaching positions could be eliminated in the district next fall, increasing class sizes to about 30 students.Manners are elementary for one Compton class
This would be a real test for the friends -- among a group of 25 black and Latino students who practice etiquette every Tuesday after school. Teachers call them the Gentlemen Scholars. They can tie their own ties, make toasts and fold cloth napkins in their laps. But they don't often get the chance. All 381 students at their school qualify for free lunches, making Lawry's, a restaurant where the cheapest entree is nearly $30, a rare treat.Florez to governor: Are you smarter than a 12th grader?
An offended state senator challenged the governor to prove he has what it takes to run the state by taking a test — the one all California students must pass to graduate from high school.Column: Design of new arts high school convoluted, costly
What's got everyone talking is the odd-looking tower that rises 140 feet above the 101 Freeway, directly across from the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. The futuristic metallic edifice, with a wraparound spiral Dr. Seuss would love, is not part of a theme park. It is the signature adornment on a new arts-oriented public high school that will cost roughly $230 million.Clovis Unified considers creating an online charter
Clovis Unified -- which has built a statewide reputation with high-performing schools and strict rules for dress and behavior -- may pursue a dramatic departure from tradition: a high school where students take classes entirely online.Teacher held on suspicion of molestation
