Column: Students remember some of their best teachers

Every year during Teacher Appreciation time, I ask my college students to remember a special teacher they had in elementary school, and write a few lines about him or her. I'm always amazed how certain teachers stand out in the students' memories after so many years and what an impact they had on their students' lives.

School club trains students to work with their autistic peers

During recess at Gold Ridge Elementary School in Folsom, barriers between special education students and those in the general student population are broken down. Much of the credit goes to the school's autism social facilitation club.

District won't open new high school this fall

Schools can't spare time or dimes for field trips

Sixty percent of teachers surveyed across the nation reported decreased funding for field trips in recent years. In California, that could get worse as school districts grapple with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's proposed budget, which would cut about $4.8 billion in education funding this year and next.

Suspensions point to trouble in schools

California public school educators suspended students more than 332,000 times for violence or drugs last year - a jump of nearly 16,000 from the prior year.
