1 in 10 students suspended each year

About one in every 10 Coachella Valley public school children is suspended, on average, at least once each year. And while drug busts and incidents of violence are more likely to grab media headlines - and parents' attention - statistics show that disruption, or what some say is a simple lack of respect, more frequently leads to disciplinary action in schools.

Schools substituting field trips with video links

Videoconferencing technology allows schools to introduce students to places they might otherwise not see. Classes at schools throughout California use technology to virtually visit state parks in San Mateo, San Diego and Tuolumne counties and learn about elephant seals, paleontology and the Gold Rush.

S.F. schools take on racism, classism

San Francisco Superintendent Carlos Garcia took a first stab at putting his mark on city schools Tuesday with a plan that pushes the district to face racism and classism head on.

Districts tearing up teachers' pink slips

Months after massive protests and alarm over school layoffs began, only a fraction of the teachers who received pink slips will lose their jobs.

Soaring payroll stymies 'reformer' governor

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's inability to stop the growth of the state's payroll despite his pledges to reform government spending shows that he is hampered by a problem that has cursed many of California' governors before him, political observers said Tuesday.
