Schools to get $6.5M in funds for construction, repairs

Calaveras Unified School District received the largest award, about $4.325 million matching grant which will go toward the construction of a joint-use library at Valley Springs Elementary School and the construction of 16 new classrooms.

5 charter schools expanding to include K-6

The 120-student Career Academy at Piner-Olivet is one of five charter schools in Santa Rosa that apparently must expand the grade levels offered to students as a result of a 2003 state law. The charter school for seventh through 11th grades is part of the Piner-Olivet School District.

L.A. Unified finds no major quake damage at schools

Officials with the Los Angeles Unified School District, the nation's second-largest school system, said there were no immediate reports of major damage from today's earthquake and they knew of no injuries to staff or students, thousands of whom were attending class.

Area schools withstand quake vibrations

Area school districts and colleges reported no major damage from Tuesday's earthquake. The Long Beach Unified School District reported no damages. The quake occurred after summer school has ended, a time when few students were present.

Los Angeles USD thinking smaller

If Los Angeles Unified officials decide Thursday to place a $7 billion bond on the fall ballot, they are expected to campaign on a plan to build small schools of 500 students or less. But while the district has been talking up the need for smaller schools for at least five years, it has continued to build mammoth campuses to warehouse thousands of students.

Students, teachers lobby for more aid

More than a dozen teachers and students gathered Tuesday, hoping to get their local lawmaker, Sen. Jim Battin, R-La Quinta, to push for a budget that would prevent deeper cuts to California schools.

His first day of school

Four schools - along with Fremont, Victory and Wilson - were on the whirlwind itinerary for Superintendent Tony Amato on the first opening day of his fledgling tenure. Amato greeted teachers and principals at each site, stole the floor from the teachers in a couple of classes along the way and wisecracked everywhere he went.
