Teacher sentenced to prison

A middle school teacher who taught music and history for a dozen years in Tierrasanta had downloaded thousands of pieces of child pornography before investigators identified him through an Internet payment system, prosecutors said. Yesterday, a federal judge ordered Eric Standefer to serve five years and 10 months in prison for possessing the pornography.

County, district face claims in Oxnard killing

The family of an Oxnard eighth-grader who was shotby a classmate at school has filed personal injury claims against the school district and county, alleging that their failure to protect the boy led to his death.

Schools get cameras for interviews on voting experience

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa turned documentarian Monday, interviewing a Los Angeles teenager to show local high school students how to use video cameras to record first-time voting experiences and possibly win a trip to the 2009 presidential inauguration.

Area schools to begin year with new leadership

Students, teachers making own mark on new high schools

As students all over Kern County started their first day back at school Monday, Independence and Mira Monte high schools had about 2,000 freshmen and sophomores walk through their doors for the first time.
