Use for lot tapped as a school site is still undecided

The fate of a 22-acre empty lot in Moorpark identified as the site for a new school is still unresolved.

Some class sizes shrink

Thanks to a special state grant, seven campuses in the Oxnard School District began shrinking class sizes this school year, dropping from 40 to 25 students in some cases.

School cuts cause pain

Counselors are a close-knit group in the Folsom Cordova Unified School District, as evidenced by the hugs and misty eyes when Nikka Vaughan-Strivers and Rennie Simpson said farewell to each other last month. Both women had been laid off as high school counselors – part of the Folsom Cordova district's reduction of about 48 full-time equivalent positions for the 2008-09 school year.

Paradise USD grievance will be heard before mediator

An outside mediator will be called in to help settle a complaint the Paradise Classified Employees Association filed against Paradise Unified School District in 2002.

Schools prize attendance

From simple to slick, school districts in the region use a variety of tactics to get kids to school. Students receive handwritten notes from principals complimenting them on attendance. Administrators call parents regularly to remind them of attendance issues. Other schools reward kids with pencils or pizza parties, or popcorn for an entire class.

Del Mar hires new head of schools

Del Mar school trustees last night unanimously voted to hire the head of the Hermosa Beach City School District as superintendent. Sharon McClain beat out 20 other candidates from around the nation.

After proposing a budget in January and issuing the standard "May Revise" after tax returns were counted this spring, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Wednesday made yet another budget proposal. He hopes lawmakers will embrace it to end the 52-day standoff over the spending plan.
