ESCONDIDO: Elementary district to look at options for financing retiree health benefits

Elementary school district officials are exploring their options, including using bond financing, for covering a $17.9 million liability for retirees' health benefits, officials said. At a meeting Thursday night, Assistant Superintendent Gina Manusov presented Escondido Union School District trustees with several possible ways to fund the district's long-term obligation to pay current and future retirees' medical insurance bills.

'This is every teacher's dream'

Ann Leichtag Elementary School is a picture of controlled chaos this week. Crews have been testing fire alarms, washing windows and spreading asphalt while teachers have been unpacking dozens of boxes. But Tuesday morning, the new campus will sparkle for the San Marcos Unified School District's first day of school. The district delayed its start of school from August to September this year to save on utilities.

New LAUSD goals set by superintendent

Welcoming administrators back to school Thursday, Los Angeles Unified Superintendent David Brewer III outlined new measures to track student performance and urged educators to work harder to improve test scores.
