Stockton USD diplomacy

This week, the district revised its graduation policy so that students who haven't met graduation requirements but are close - they are shy some credits or haven't passed one or both sections of the exit exam - can still take part in commencement ceremonies as long as they agree to follow up with summer school or exit-exam preparation to eventually earn a diploma.

For schools, sour economy has silver lining

A significant number of parents who have lost jobs in the past year are choosing to use some of their free time volunteering in schools, according to an informal survey of principals and parent leaders in San Joaquin and Calaveras counties.

560 teachers still are needed to retire early

So far, just 73 teachers have put in for early retirement from the San Diego Unified School District – barely more than 10 percent needed to make a delicate budget-cutting plan work. Five years ago, the San Ramon Valley school district needed two tries to successfully pass a parcel tax to stop what it called drastic budget cuts. Now — with the tax expiring and state budget cuts again reducing money to schools — the district is again coming back to voters for its second attempt to renew the tax, again at a higher amount. And once again, the district is facing vocal opposition from those who say the money is not needed.

Charter schools to increase 50 percent in Santa Clara County

President Obama's recent endorsement was "a game changer," making charters a bipartisan issue, said Gary Larson of the California Charter Schools Association. But charter schools' growth had been on track well before the president extolled their virtues in a March speech.

Strip-searches at schools go to Supreme Court

The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday will hear a case on strip searching in schools. Its decision, the first to address this in schools, will set legal limits, if any, on the authority of school officials to search for drugs or weapons on campus.
