Does the advisor to a student club have to be a teacher?

Question: Does the advisor to a student club have to be a teacher, or can it be any district employee?  Also, can a teacher be an advisor to a club at a different site?

Response:  Club advisors must be certificated (Ed Code 48933(b)).  There is nothing in code that we are aware of that would prevent a teacher or other certificated employee from a different site to be a club advisor.  However, you should review Board Policy in your district to make sure there are not any provisions that should be followed in this circumstance. It may also be good to check current Bargaining Unit Contracts regarding extra duty stipends, etc. to make sure there are not any limitations there as well.
