Trust accounts in organized vs. unorganized ASBs

Question: This is my second year as the ASB Bookkeeper. The sixth-grade teams have trust accounts for trips/activities that are co-curricular. They do not have constitutions and they do have formal meeting where minutes are recorded. I have not done anything to change this. Do they or can they fall under guidelines for elementary school where the teacher is more the driving force than the students?

Answer:  In your district, is the 6th grade part of the elementary school or middle school?  This determines whether the ASB is organized or unorganized. Student organizations in middle schools and high schools are called organized student body organizations because the students organize their activities around student clubs and a student council. In organized ASBs, students are primarily responsible for their organizations with the assistance of an advisor. In elementary schools, the ASB is unorganized because there usually is not a student council or student club. While students in the elementary schools do raise funds, they have more limited involvement in decisions about the fund-raising events and how the funds are spent. For additional information, our Associated Student Body accounting manual and desk reference is available at our Web site, fcmat.org.
