Question: My question is about credit cards and their usage by ASB. May ASBs use credit cards to purchase items like decorations for dances?
Response: Student body funds must be used to promote and finance a program of worthwhile activity beyond those provided by the district. State law also requires that all student body expenses be pre-approved. In high schools and middle schools the student organizations are called organized student body associations because the students organize their activities around student clubs and a student council and are also involved in making the decision about how the ASB funds are spent.
Purchasing items like decorations for dances would be appropriate if pre-approved by the ASB. Using a credit card for pre-approved expenditures would depend on the district’s policy on credit card use, if any. Your ASB board approved policy may also be able to give you specific guidance on whether or not credit cards can be used.
