Can an unorganized student body purchase new trees for the campus?

Question:  Can an unorganized student body purchase new trees and benches for the campus?

Response:  Student body funds must be used to promote and finance a program of worthwhile activity beyond those provided by the district.  State law also requires that all student body expenses be pre-approved.  In the case of an unorganized student body organization like yours, the expenditures must be pre-approved by the principal, or designee.

With the above understanding of how the funds are to be used, using the funds for new trees and benches for the campus is acceptable unless the district has an adopted plan that these types of items HAVE to be at each school site.  Normally, there are not district-set requirements to have a certain number of trees and/or benches, so if students want these types of items to better the school environment, it is an acceptable expenditure since the district does not have a responsibility to provide the items.
