Can I pay a student (by check) to collect money at the basketball games and would I need a W9?Response: In our experience, we don't usually find students, or other individuals, being paid to take money at extra curricular events. Normally the time is volunteered. You should check with your own business office to see if paying students is acceptable per Board Policy and practice.
If it is acceptable to pay them, the answer is "yes" as to whether or not a W9/1099 needs to be issued in order to be compliant with tax laws.
