Are non-academic student clubs allowed to fund raise on campus?

Question:  Are non-academic student clubs allowed to fund raise on campus?  If so are they allowed to deposit funds into the ASB accounts?  For example, we have the Chess Club at one of our High Schools fund raising for the Chess Club.

Response:  Associated Student Body Organizations are authorized by various Education Code Sections and the School Board, and should receive oversight by school employees and the district office of a school district.  ASBs are a group of California school students who:

  • Are currently enrolled
  • Raise money for student activities
  • Make decision on how money is spent
  • Participate in co and extra curricular activities
  • Learn good business practices

If the Chess Club is composed of currently enrolled students, with a certificated advisor, constitution and bylaws in place that are approved by the general Student Council, they can definitely be considered part of ASB.  And, if they are an approved club within the ASB, they are able to deposit funds into ASB accounts that are board approved and opened correctly using district office approved policies and procedures.
