What student records need to be kept?

Question:  I am taking on the task of condensing and organizing our cumulative records.  I am looking for help in keeping ONLY the necessary records due to storage.  I have inherited past cums cleaned to the bone and/or only transcripts of past students. The local schools seem to handle things differently so I am seeking advice.  Can I keep only a complete transcript and destroy all other materials?  I.e. report cards from K - 12 as well as enrollment data, IEP's, etc.  I do have the Ed Code but not certain I am reading it correctly.

Response: The short answer is that student records are PERMANENT and are not to be destroyed.  They MAY be microfiched or digitized.

A synopsis of a number of education codes pertaining to record retention can be found in the 2007 ASB Accounting Manual on our website at www.fcmat.org.
