FCMAT is requesting applications of interest from qualified candidates to serve as the county trustee at South Monterey County Joint Union High School District (SMCJUHSD). The district has been under state receivership since July 23, 2009, when the governor approved Senate Bill (SB) 130 (Chapter 20/2009), which included an emergency appropriation of $13 million to avert fiscal insolvency. All legal rights, duties, and powers of the district’s governing board and superintendent were returned to the district on July 1, 2016. Upon return of local governance, the state-appointed administrator completed their work and a trustee was assigned to monitor and review the district’s operations.
Under the provisions of Assembly Bill (AB) 1840 (Chapter 426/2018), the trustee now serves under the direction and supervision of the county superintendent of Dr. Deneen Guss, Monterey County Superintendent of Schools. AB 1840 designates FCMAT as the agency to identify and vet candidates to serve as county administrator or trustee. The final selection of a candidate for South Monterey County Joint Union High School District trustee will be made by Dr. Guss, with the concurrence of the state superintendent of public instruction and the president of the state board of education.
The county trustee at SMCJUHSD shall monitor and review the operations of the district, and may stay or rescind an action of the governing board of the district that, in the judgement of the trustee, may affect the financial condition of the school district.
Initial applications shall be submitted via email to SouthMonterey@fcmat.org no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, December 13, 2019.
